Be Like Mike.
“When I first joined Lifetime, I was a bit intimidated. As a 52 year-old guy who was not only out of shape, but was entirely unfamiliar with all the hardware scattered about the place, I entered the building timidly but with some anticipation that somehow I might reclaim some of the energy I had only a few short years ago.
After a few weeks getting comfortable and more confident on the elliptical machine for my one-hour “mountain peak” workouts, Mike Kneuer, one of Lifetime’s Personal Trainers, texted me and suggested I use my “Lifetime Bucks” to start some personal training. I can’t tell you how happy I was that he did!
At first, I expected that Mike would simply walk me around all the intimidating machines, teach me how to use them and then bark out orders while watching me try to fight gravity. Instead, he took me into the special gym where there was hardly any intimidating equipment – and the fun began!
Mike asked me what kind of music I liked to work out to. I didn’t really know as I wasn’t in the habit of working out, but I chose Stevie Ray Vaughan. Then Mike led me through a series of exercises that were nothing like I’d done before. I only know that every muscle in my body was involved because they all protested – in unison – for a full week after!
Without going into more detail, I’ll offer a few bullet points to help convey how valuable Mike has been to me:
After my fourth session, I remember thinking, “I feel at least five years younger.”
After my sixth session, it dawned on me that there had been certain movements I had been avoiding for years because they were painful – bending at the knees, for instance. I only noticed that my left knee had been giving me fits for years because it wasn’t any more – no pain whatsoever.
Also after my sixth session, I started lifting up my foot to waist level to tie my shoe, rather than going down on one knee, then the other – just because I could!
At the same time I began training with Mike, I was training for a high-adventure backpacking trip with my 13 year-old son. I noticed, again after about six sessions, I was running up the steep hills on which we were training with a heavy backpack.
My initial goal with Mike was for him to help prepare me for that high adventure backpacking trip. To cut to the chase, after training with Mike for three months, I was able on that trip, even on our last day of hiking, to run up the mountains of New Mexico with amounts of energy I hadn’t had in years.
Is personal training expensive? Yes. However, what would it be worth to you to feel as if you were 20 years younger? What would it be worth to you to stop feeling those aches and pains that you’ve simply accepted as “natural” results of the aging process? Oh, and, what would it be worth to you to look much younger? Not to be too proud, but I look pretty damn good for 53 – I’ve had a birthday since I started with Mike and my birthday suit hasn’t looked this good since I was 30 years old.
We may not be able to reverse the aging process, but I can guarantee that if you spend 3 months training with Mike, you’ll feel as if you did. In addition, you’ll wonder why you didn’t try this far earlier in life.
So, I challenge you to ask Mike to help you achieve your goals. Maybe we’ll run into each other while I continue towards my next goal – high-adventure backpacking with my youngest son the year after next.”
